Mix #23: The City of Godz- Akron's Finest

Ampichino, Freeze and Young Bossi are three of the best rappers out right now and arguably the best rap group active. Hailing from Akron, OH they have maintained strong ties in the Bay from the beginning, while developing a style that is all their own. Listening to their music it's not hard to see why it has connected with audiences in the Bay Area so strongly. Their style of rap displays influences from all over the country, especially the Bay, and sounds like what Bay Area rap might be like if the Hyphy movement never happened. In other words, the music jumps between introspective and melancholy ("Livin' N Hell" may be the best Sad Rap song ever recorded) to some of the hardest raps around.
Ampichino was the first one to get recognition in the Bay Area by Yukmouth in the early 2000's and soon started doing features on Yuk and C-Bo albums and quickly expanded his network to AP.9 and Jacka of the Mob Figaz. Within the last couple years it seems the three of them have become regular features on every prominent Bay Area rap album and they are gaining new fans in the area every day. Despite all the success they've experienced thus far, they are still criminally underrated in my book.


Ampichino, Young Bossi and Freeze have all put out amazing work, both as a group and on solo projects, Ampichino's Mysery of 2008 is one of my favorite rap albums of all time. With this mixtape I have put together the best songs the three of them have released as a group and as solo artists. All three of them are members of Yukmouth's Regime, so hopefully they will be featured prominently on the forthcoming Dragon Gang album. Also Ampichino and Young Bossi have a duo album coming out titled Cop Heavy Gang and Ampichino has a solo album coming out soon called War of the Worlds. Look out for all those projects, they are making the dopest music around right now, period.
