Mix #27: Best of HD

HD is going to be the next big thing in the Bay.

HD represents everything that is right with the Bay Area rap scene right now. As the major label music industry has collapsed this past decade all the money that was in the rap game has disappeared. What that means is that the number of rappers major labels are going to support is very very small now and anyone hoping to get into the industry now has to do it independently. That puts the Bay Area in a very unique position because the whole scene has been somewhat insular since the 90's and has already developed a strong network for independent artists. Therefore in this rap recession the Bay Area has flourished while other regions have faltered. HD epitomizes the independent hustle in the rap game right now; his constant flow of mixtapes these past two years have lifted him from relative obscurity to one of the Bay's brightest stars.

All of HD's albums are cheap projects; lots of recycled and budget beats and features exclusively from his Bearfaced Gang camp, but they all are surprisingly solid. Pick up any of his albums and there is not a single embarrassing 'track for the ladies' and the songs have real lyrical and musical diversity, so the albums can actually be played all the way through. The quality of his music has lead to the hype around him growing exponentially this year and a good number of people in the Bay are getting genuinely excited for each of his releases.
The grimey, low-budget feel of his music is apparent in the aesthetics of HD's music videos, which usually consist of him and a gang of his goons just posted up in his neighborhood.

No budget, but tight. Also major lol at the guy in white on PCP or something.

HD represents that you don't need need a lot of money to make great rap music in the Bay. There is a lot of charisma that comes across in his rhymes and as much lyrical depth and diversity a fan of ganster rap could ask for. Also HD's Bearfaced Gang has introduced us to many young rappers with a lot of potential such as Hen Sippa (who is the best worst rapper out), Lil Rod (who is tight despite having a highly questionable name), 600BJ, and Blast Holiday among others.

The only thing that could potentially hold HD back is all the shit he has been getting into, he is frequently bouncing in and out of jail or getting shot or some other activity that is not copacetic with having a successful career of any kind. I've seen a video of him up in a hospital bed after getting shot, with as cast on his entire arm, walking with a cane, and walking around with an ankle moniter all in the span of a year and a half. HD is definitely with the shit, but that's not necessarily a good thing.
As long as he stops catching cases and getting caught up in street violence I see him becoming the next big Bay Area rapper. Not sure about his appeal outside of the Bay because of the fuckshit rap that people enjoy elsewhere, but I can see him blowing up in the Bay Area and becoming the next Jacka in that he is real big around here and gets a decent amount of national exposure as well.

His music is not going to shatter your ideas of what rap music can be, but quite simply he is putting out the best Bay Area gangster rap right now.
His new album Fresh, produced by DJ Fresh dropped yesterday, which should be amazing and will hopefully further expand his audience base.
Here is a collection of his best song so far. Download and enjoy:

  1. Really glad you've come around to HD Thomas. For a while it seemed you were ignoring him or just sleeping on him, which seems to be what happened. I've enjoyed what he's done since his early work with Livewire and became a fan after the original Extortion Muzic. He's the leader of the pack in Oakland's "millenium mobb music" movement imo. I bought Fresh and it's well worth the money, I'd say it might not only be his best work to date, but the best DJ Fresh project in a while now.

    After having a silent falling out with J. Stalin, he proved he was more than capable of headlining his own movement with his friends. I really want a Lil Rod solo project, his song on EM2 on that Beyonce beat was awesome.

    Good shit on the mix, a lot of great songs on here. Let's all hope they're able to stay out of the extra shit long enough to drop plenty more good music on a consistent basis like they have been doing.

  2. Mike, tell me more about this fall out with Stalin?
    I thought he was a Livewire-artists still?
    I mean Kiwi, Blood and probably Rue seems to be on Fresh so he can't be completely fallen out with Livewire...
    He and Rue came up as Young & Restless I'd be suprised if they stopped making music

    Yeah I have always been a lightweight fan of his, but really came around on him these past few months. Looking forward to hearing Fresh and I agree about Lil Rod, he has a lot of potential.
    I haven't heard about any problems he has with Stalin either though.

    @Raymo
    Thanks, I hope all this beef shit ends too. Not a good look.

    @bearfaced
    Not really sure what you're upset about.

  7. Well since both parties have chosen not to speak about their differences publicly, I'll leave street rumors on the street. I'll just say around the time Ice City: ABC Issue came out, you'll notice HD started focusing solely on Bearfaced and was no longer appearing on J. Stalin projects. He still collabs with Livewire artists like Shady Nate & Lil Blood, because he knew them prior to being on the label and really, Stalin isn't about to tell grown men what to do.

    This all happened around the same time HD fell out with Lil Rue, who was sequentially kicked out of The Bearfaced Gang. That was a bit more public if you followed either of them on Twitter or Youtube. The first public shot fired was by Lil Rod(who is the only one to take it to wax) on Closer, which dropped at the end of last year. So this has been kind of quietly happening for almost a year now. I'm not even gonna get into all of Lil Rue's beefs, that guy is barely Livewire still as of right now.

    Lil Rod has the third verse.

  11. Wow the comment section is real wild these days but I did learn about recent Bay Area Ice City specific beefs. Didn't know Lil Rue and HD didn't fuck with each other anymore, too bad.

    Also, Thomas, thank you for this tape. I had initially thought HD was Hen Sippa, so cast him aside but this best of HD is all I've been playing since you put it out. He's got that charisma and otherness that definitely makes him stand out far from his peers.
