Young Gully "Purple Smoke"
Gully just came out with a new album, David, produced entirely by DJ Fresh. My biggest concern for the release was the songs blending together due to Young Gully and DJ Fresh's strikingly similar beat preferences. They both are capable of making/rapping over different types of beats, but it seems they both frequently fall back on retro-tinged laid back beats at the end of the day (example). The album is able to avoid that problem for the most part, with Fresh bringing some diverse beats to the project and Young Gully changing up his flow on several tracks. A couple beats on here switch up mid-song, which is a cool feature that DJ Fresh has been developing lately. It's nice to see "Lose It" finally put on an official release too, a lot of people were turned off by the use of a vocoder on that song, but it works perfectly there. Good album!

Street Knowledge ft. Husalah & The Jacka "Ima Boss (Remix)"
Speaking of robot voices, yet another Husalah feature has turned up, here he synthesizes his voice heavily in the hook. As with "Once Again", he probably overdoes it with the vocoder, but oh well. Street Knowledge is a young rapper signed to The Jacka's The Artist Records, who has an album titled New Skool Knowledge coming out in the near future. Haven't really heard much by him apart from a handful of features on Joe Blow songs, but if he's anything like the rest of rappers that have come up under The Jacka, he will develop into an amazing rapper.
C-Bo "Original Gangsta"
There are five new C-Bo songs that have popped up on a random SoundCloud page with no explanation or promotion. The only information on the page is "new Cbo album coming 2012," so I guess these are leaked tracks from his forthcoming album. The songs are decent, not necessarily groundbreaking, but it's always good to hear new music from him. The track above is the best of the batch along with "Every Day" featuring T-Nutty, who complements C-Bo's style nicely and always makes great songs with him.

MondreM.A.N. "Fancy"
MondreM.A.N. (1/2 of Main Attrakionz) just came out with a new album through Bandcamp titled M A N. The release is decent, but isn't really connecting with me like their recent group works have, or even like Mondre's previous solo album, Dope Since '91. The songs are a bit too similar in tempo and atmosphere for my tastes and most beats are rather sparse, but I can imagine this release connecting with others a lot more than me. You can check out the entire album over here.
Shoboat ft. Keak Da Sneak "ATF"
Shoboat has a new compilation out, Hunid Racks, and just like everything else he's done this year it appears to be flying under the radar of most rap fans. Shoboat's Rush Hour from earlier this year was one of the best rap albums of the year, but he doesn't make obscure pop culture references in his raps that the writers at Pitchfork will think are cute, so he'll probably never get the attention he deserves and be relegated to doing promo for each of his albums by posting about about them relentlessly on Bay Area rap message boards (this is what's happening now). Fuck every rapper that the internet jocks to death and every music website regurgitating the same music by them claiming to cover "indie music."
Rich The Factor just came out with a new album and it's easily one of the top five releases of the year, so look out for a song-by-song breakdown of that later in the week.
What do you think of these songs?
What new rap music have you been bumping lately?
What do you think of this picture?
That Shoboat song is great, gonna look for that rush hour now.
ReplyDeleteI cant listen to Young Gully anymore, I'm pretty sure I forgave him of the worst jansport rap crimes just cos hes a gangsta rapper from the bay with good beats. Hes no Freddie Gibbs but hes still kinda one-note and drops clangers constantly. That said, I can still bump shit like this off of the production:

In theory, T-Pain is the greatest dude.
Is Mondreman half of Main Attrakionz? Is squadda B not a part anymore?
ReplyDeleteNah they're still the Main Attrakionz, they just drop random solo shit all the time.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all that picture is the funniest thing I've seen in quite some time and it makes me really happy. "Noodles, Michael. Noodles." - Keifer Sutherland in "The Lost Boys" basically sums up how I feel about that.
ReplyDeleteAre you ScarredSoul1 on youtube? That dude/whomever/whatever always has all the Bay Area raps/blappinist blaps I want to listen to the day they come out ... very convenient and I often want to thank whomever it is somewhow. Agreed with Done that Young Gully kind of bores me, i sampled a few tracks from David (thanks ScarredSoul1!) namely "Purple Smoke" and don't think I could make it through two whole discs.
Have you listened to Keak Hendrix yet? I didn't think that album was real or would ever actually come out.
No that isn't me, I have a youtube page, but haven't found the time to start uploading stuff to it yet.
ReplyDeleteI thought Keak Hendrix was pretty dope, I wrote a bit about it here: http://100grandonmywrist.blogspot.com/2011/11/new-rap-music.html
As far as Young Gully, I can understand the criticism of him being a one-note rapper, but he's real talented and hints at something greater on David by switching up his style on certain songs.
Out of all the songs posted I liked the Shoboat one the most, him & Keak were a good combo. I haven't been listening to much rap lately tbh. I was playing The Mob Trial Trilogy yesterday, that's about it. That picture makes me think I need board shorts in the same pattern as that top hat, SWAG!
ReplyDelete@ Billy Dee Trilliams, scarredsoul1 is my youtube channel. Thanks for following it, glad to hear someone appreciates it.
It's sad how two years ago I would listen to any young gully record now every record of his has the same flow, with damn near the same beat. It seems like gully is even bored with his flow from the yh to free chris he just dropped too much average shit and now I'm not a fan
