Ampichino + Shoboat = Best Song of 2013 (so far)

HI HOW IS LIFE? HAVE YOU HEARD THIS SONG? IT IS HARD AS FUUUUUUCK.

As previously stated on this blog, Ampichino and Shoboat are an odd pair whose rap styles don't really mix, but they somehow manage to make it work once again here. Ampichino is the more substantial rapper of the two, while Shoboat has a more dynamic flow that has a palpable Southern vibe to it. Together Shoboat often outshines Amp with his more accessible style, but Ampichino working outside of his melancholy-Akron comfort zone is only making him a better rapper.

If someone were to ask me today "Hey Tomahawk (that's my cool nickname that people call me all the time (RE: once)), who is your favorite rapper out right now?" my answer would be a three-way tie between E-40, Rich the Factor, and Ampichino. Songs like this just further cement my belief that Ampichino is one of the best active rappers out right now.

I see people of the internet complaining about beats like this all the time, saying things like "oh this is just some generic trap shit that has been done a million times, I only enjoy complicated anti-melodic beats by El-P blah blah blah." Beats are not like reading academic books about the War of 1812 where you appreciate dense informative materials by old white people. Music is like a woman with big tits and a pretty face: nothing complicated, the beat is hard and that makes you hard...Wait I don't really know where I was going with this analogy, forget I said anything about erections and just remember that I like this song a lot.

According to the video this song is going to be on Da Krazies 2, which will be the sequel to Ampichino's *Just OK* album from 2010 that contained this super awesome song:

Really looking forward to hearing some more new Ampichino and Shoboat material this year!

What do you think of this song???
Should Shoboat just move to Atlanta already so that he can become famous???
Is Ampichino's music becoming less depressing????

  1. Really love this song, I'm supportive of every song Amp does that doesn't have a melancholy beat with a sped up soul sample at this point. Not that I think he should abandon his signature sound but he's covered that ground enough at this point. He has to change up the beats to keep things interesting.

Really like the song/video they made a few months back. Shoboat actually killed Amp on it for once lol.

Shoboat & all other Ohio rappers should probably move to up their visibility. The midwest is so insolated.

  2. I like how the snowing-in-the-summer metaphor is still going strong. Good song.

    1. It's a timeless classic rap metaphor.

  3. trap is so so tired at this point, for every mike will made it beat there are about 10 million lex luger pastiches. *thousand yard stare* One day zaytoven will come back and save us from this generic trap hell...

    1. Yeah, I'm kind of bothered by the infiltration of trap style production into regions that I'd thought were largely immune to broader rap trends. Not everyone needs to rap over half-time Luger drums with gothic string loops! Some people sound downright awful over that sort of production because they're not used to writing for such comparatively slow beats. Everyone should do their own thing.

  4. Yeah great track. '300 rounds' was great too, which I believe is the video Mike was talking about but I disagree about Shoboat killing him on it; Amp's flow that switches to double time for the end of his verse is ill on that track.
I don't think this necessarily indicative of where Amp's music is heading though....Dead Presidents, if you remember, had a similar vibe and sound to both new tracks between the pair. It's basically Shoboat style tracks with Amp guesting on them, don't get me wrong though - I love it.

Ampichino is undoubtedly my favourite active rapper, I also really dig Da Krazies although I owned much of the material on it when it was released. I think of it as a compilation rather than an album and I believe that helps...

I might be one of the last but I also still really dig the melancholy beats with the sped up soul samples; Ampi's beat selection in this style is just so downbeat and introspective it creates a very specific mood for his releases that goes beyond most other rappers. Akron needs a new Ampichino album after (comparatively) underwhelming releases from Young Bossi and Fishscaleblow to really re-ignite the scene. New albums from Freeze and Ren Fetti are also on the horizon too which may help...

  5. I loved Amp on Myzery and Devil'z Rejectz, but his music has been sounding stale to me recently.

His lyricism is always dope, but as with Jacka, one can get to the point where they rap so much it just doesn't sound like they're trying anymore, and I feel like Amp is there.

None of the stuff he's making sounds quite this deep anymore

As far as Shoboat, hell yeah he needs to get known. If he was a southern artist, I might change my mind about there being so much southern rap played on KMEL (not really...)
